"Checking In"

The main problem I'm having with the final research problem is getting all my information together and figuring out a way way to make it 10 minutes long. Besides this class I don't have other research projects so I don't have other challenges/ struggles besides the ones I'm having with this course.

Intellectual property

I've never been exposed to the meaning of intellectual property so I'm not sure what it means. An experts definition: Intellectual property refers to the ownership of intangible and non-physical goods. This includes ideas, names, designs, symbols, artwork, writings, and other creations. It also refers to digital media, such as audio and video clips that can be downloaded online. I can think of multiple examples: youtube, business logos, business names, pictures (artwork), etc. The concept changes because it can be shared among others and is no longer very, "intellectual".

Urvashi Vaid Presentation

1. I didn't really have any expectations because I wasn't really sure what to expect or kno wmuch about it besides it dealing with the LGBT community and topics.
2. The information was presented by a speaker and most of it was about same-sex marriage but also covered poverty within the LGBT people as well as when the movement is going to be over; at what point will you be able to day the movement is over? The information didn't differ much from previous learned information because I grew up in a very open minded not judgement and accepting atmosphere at home; the information was very descriptive and more experienced words of opinion and facts going on in the world and LGBT community.
3. One thing that I learned that I didn't previously know was that Minnesota could be banning same-sex marriage and that only 6 states out of the entire country honor/allow same-sex marriage.
4. Yes, she travels all over to speak on LGBT issues, stating her opinions, facts and experiences. She is defiantly on authority on the topic because people look to her for advice and views on issues/topics dealing with the LGBT community and she has written books on these issues.
5. There's plenty that I could take away from this presentation considering my topic is same-sex marriage. I can take away the enormous fight that the LGBT people have been putting up for years and year, creating a movement and they're not going to give up. I think that everyone should look at them for determination and inspiration because I think it truly shows a lot about the LGBT community.
6. I don't think any body from class had the opportunity to ask a question but other people in the audience did and the speaker answered very well. Her time was limited so I don't think she could further her answer as she wanted but she was able to get her point across.

Google 101

One thing that I learned from our class time with Google was that there was a little tool bar one the left hand side that you can limit your results to being as specific as you want to the time frame and whether it's a blog or book and more. It was also interesting to see all of the search engines that were possible. Another thing that I learned was how you can enter a picture in the image search and it will tell you what/who it is; I thought that was the neatest part of Google 101. Next time I use Google for something specific other than a random search I'm definitely going to take advantage of the extra tools I learned from class!

Blogs

Blogs are tricky; I think they're a good source of opinion and perspectives into topics that you might not normally look into or think about in a certain way such as the writer does but I don't think that they are necessarily scholarly or factual. For example, This link will lead you to the top 100 blog posts to read written by women. Now, I would assume that some men out there would have to disagree with half of these blogs. Some of them on the other hand actually talk about important issues and are factual for example, this one. It discusses violence and ways our government are dealing with it. I think that it's hard to say whether blogs are scholarship or news because there are so many different blogs and categories that each one differs from the next.

Research Reflection

After conducting all the database researches I haven't really come across any other questions, just trying to find more information about the same questions so I can further go in to depth about them and connect them all together. My biggest challenge as been to find valid information connecting heroin addiction to teenagers and not just the general population of Americans. To overcome this challenge I just have to keep searching and reading through information that covers teenagers and possibly reading it a few times to make stronger connections to the research already found.

Search String

I chose to search my research topic on Google. I thought that Google provided more specific listing and information that I wanted about my topic than the Academic Search Premier. In both of the databases you are able to narrow down your results by being specific with your words and possibly using other descriptive words to narrow down the results. My search did work with "herion AND addiction AND teenagers". I found 68 with the Academic Search Premier and more than I could imagine from Google. About 15 were available in full text through the Academic Search Premier and about 75% of the articles I looked at through Google were available in full text.
